THE PREVENTIVE MEDICINE FIELD Each
year, the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine honors the most
distinguished individuals and programs in the field of preventive medicine
and public health. On June 6, 2005 ATPM presented the following award
recipients at the 12th Congress of Health Profession Educators meeting in
Washington, DC: ·
Richard Riegelman MD, MPH, PhD is the recipient
of the Duncan Clark Award. This award
is given to a senior level person with a distinguished record of achievement
in the areas of teaching, research and/or advocacy in the field of public
health and preventive medicine. ·
The Prevention Theme in the MD Curriculum of
the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry received the
Outstanding Educational Program of the Year Award which recognizes an
innovative program, department or academic institution for their involvement
in advancing undergraduate or graduate medical education in preventive
medicine and public health which furthers student interest in the discipline.
Thomas A. Pearson, MD, PhD, MPH accepted the award on behalf of the program. ·
The Department of Community Health and
Preventive Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine also received the
Outstanding Educational Program of the Year Award. CCPH
member Daniel S. Blumenthal, MD, MPH accepted the award on behalf
the department. ·
Matthew Boulton, MD, MPH is the recipient of
the F. Marian Bishop Educator of the Year Award. This award is given to teachers who have contributed to the
instruction of students or residents in the field of public health and
preventive medicine. To

NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY SERVICE DRAFT STRATEGIC PLAN Comments Due By August 31 For
more than a decade, the Corporation for National and Community Service
(CNCS), through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America
programs, has mobilized a new generation of engaged citizens. This year, more
than 1.6 million individuals of all ages and backgrounds will serve through
those programs to help thousands of national and community nonprofit
organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies meet local
needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and
other critical areas. A
draft of the CNCS’s 2005 - 2010 Strategic Plan is now available at http://www.nationalservice.gov.
Comments are sought by August 31.

Johnson & Johnson (J&J)/Society for the Arts in Healthcare
Partnership to Promote Arts and Healing Grant. This grant program seeks to
promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for
patients, their families, and caregivers. Proposals are being sought from
healthcare organizations and/or arts agencies working in partnership to
produce innovative projects to serve patients, their families, and caregivers

Available to Recruit Baby Boomer Volunteers - Deadline: August 22 - The Corporation for
National and Community Service has announced the availability of
approximately $4 million in Challenge Grants for a small number of nonprofit
organizations to expand or launch new programs that encourage the baby boomer
generation [born between 1946 and 1964] to become volunteers to help meet

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s program is designed to encourage experts in

Sept 15 - The Charles Frueauff Foundation
focuses on at-risk youths in all its funding categories: education, health,
and social services. Tutoring, sexual-health and job-training initiatives receive
preference. Call for Proposals- HRSA Rural Health Care Services Outreach
Grant Program - Deadline: Sept 16 - Program encourages the
development of new and innovative health care delivery systems in rural
communities that lack essential health care services. The emphasis of the
grant program is on service delivery through creative strategies requiring
the grantee to form a consortium with at least two additional
partners. For example, through consortia of schools, churches,
emergency medical service providers, local universities, private
practitioners and the like, rural communities can create hospice care, bring
health check-ups to children, and provide prenatal care to women in remote

An important role of the Fogarty International Research Collaboration (FIC)is
to foster discovery and reduce global health disparities through the support
of international cooperation across the continuum of basic, clinical and
applied biomedical, and health sciences. Additional

health networks. Grant funds are used to support activities that strengthen

Healthy Vision Community Awards Program To Support Healthy
People 2010 Vision Objectives - Deadline: August 31 - The National Eye Institute
announces the 2006 Healthy Vision Community Awards Program, providing funding
for the implementation of health education activities that support the
Healthy Vision 2010 objectives and the Healthy People 2010 goals to reduce
health disparities and improve quality of life. The focus of the 2006
awards is on diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, occupational eye injury,

Community College Excellence Award -
Deadline: August 31 - The Award celebrates and highlights the
accomplishments of colleges that are helping less-advantaged youth and adults

details. Call for Applications-Ethics of Prevention and Public Health
Fellowship - Deadline: Sept 1 - In July 2002, the Cancer
Prevention Fellowship Program established specialty training in the ethics of
prevention and public health. The CPFP has for years provided a
multidisciplinary training environment for postdoctoral biomedical and social
scientists, clinicians, and public health professionals. Training in the
ethics of prevention and public health represents a new initiative within
this well-established and highly regarded program. In addition to its unique
features, the structure of this training is identical to that of the parent
program, including eligibility, stipends, benefits, application procedures,

for Innovative Public Health Curriculum –
Deadline: Sept 2 – As part of its efforts to promote excellence in
public health education, research and practice, Delta Omega created this

Proposals to present your organization's or community's successful practices

Community-based Chronic Disease Prevention; Transforming Systems for Health

Second Annual International Conference on Social Science Research – Deadline: Sept 15 -
This interdisciplinary conference will draw together faculty members,
research scientists, and professionals from the social sciences, and provide
them with the opportunity to interact with colleagues from the same field and
from other, related fields. Cross-disciplinary submissions are particularly
encouraged as is participation by international scholars. Additional information Award Available for Best
Medical Student Paper in Preventive Medicine – Deadline: Sept 20 - The American College of
Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is offering an award for the best paper on
preventive medicine written by a medical student. The winning paper will be
published in the American Journal of preventive Medicine. The author will
receive a $1000 prize and will be honored at the ACPM's annual meeting. All

the 17th Annual National Service-Learning Conference: We the People – Deadline: Sept 26 - The
