Why Washington?

The University of Washington (UW) is one of the best places in the country to earn a Master of Health Administration (MHA) degree. We take pride in our competency-based curriculum, focus on leadership, commitment to innovation, student career development, and exceptional faculty; all of these elements make our program a national leader in health care administration training.

Prestige of the Program

When you join the UW MHA program, you join a legacy of excellence. Our program was founded in 1970 and is consistently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation's leading programs in education for Health Services Administration.

We Train Leaders

Through an innovative partnership with the Center for Leadership and Strategic Thinking at the UW Foster School of Business, you immediately begin working to develop transformational leadership skills. You will complete leadership assessments to identify your true strengths and pinpoint areas for improvement, and receive ongoing, one-on-one coaching to develop these skills throughout the program.

Competency-based Curriculum

The UW MHA curriculum follows a competency-based, multidisciplinary model, in which students develop a variety of technical, conceptual, and human leadership skills that can be applied to a broad range of health care roles and settings. Because of our competency-based approach, all of our courses are linked to the specific skills and competencies you can expect to develop throughout your course of study.

Using the National Center for Healthcare Leadership's highly regarded leadership competency model, the UW MHA faculty developed its own cutting-edge application of competency-based and adult-learning educational methods. Given this commitment to innovation, the faculty emphasizes the use of challenging simulations, case studies, and collaborative learning experiences.

Faculty Make the Difference

The backgrounds of our faculty balance theory and practice, while maintaining a strong commitment to innovation. As a student you receive the benefit of learning from this rich blend of expertise; courses are taught by seasoned health care executives, cutting-edge researchers, and practicing clinicians.

We are leaders in health administration research, investigating topics such as clinical processes, health care financing and delivery, the economic and social determinants of health, and health care policy. This research offers opportunities for student participation and enriches the experience that faculty bring to the classroom.

Teamwork, Teamwork, Teamwork . . .

Health care is a team and group-oriented industry, which is why team-based learning is at the heart of what we do. Students work in teams throughout the first and second year to develop their skills in project management and implementation, group dynamics, and leadership.

Capstone vs. Thesis

Instead of writing a paper for your final project, you will work in teams to tackle real-world projects submitted by provider organizations in the Seattle area. These short-term projects are designed to maximize hands-on experience in an area of your interest. Teams work to produce a report that is of real value to participating organizations. Take a look at recent MHA and EMHA Capstone Projects.

Career Development

The Pacific Northwest has one of the largest concentrations of health care organizations in the country, and this fact bodes well for our students. Career development includes mentorship opportunities, alumni panels, special seminars with local and visiting speakers, recruiting visits, and discussions led by local health care professionals and students. For more information, visit the Career Development page.

Job Placement

Over the past five years, job placement for our graduates has been at 98 percent.
