CSS Joins UW-IT as Classroom Technology & Events; New Active Learning Classrooms
To position UW Seattle to better respond to rapid changes in classroom technology, Classroom Support Services (CSS) has moved to UW Information Technology and changed its name to Classroom Technology & Events (CTE), effective July 1. CTE supports 300 general-use classrooms, oversees classroom construction projects, and provides event services. Over the summer, CTE expanded the digital equipment available for student loan, upgraded technology in many classrooms—with more planned in the next two years—and, with UW Libraries, created the new active learning classrooms in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Sign Up for Technology Workshops at UW Seattle; Curriculum Online
Whether you want to learn Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel, or the Canvas learning management system, UW-IT provides a variety of resources at no charge for UW students, faculty and staff. These learning tools include workshops and drop-in "Studio Times" at UW Seattle, as well as online curriculum, which is moving into the IT Connect website. Use the calendar to sign up for workshops.

Report on UW Faculty Experiences With Coursera MOOCs
A new report, “Coursera at the UW: The challenges, benefits, and surprises of teaching a MOOC”, explores the experiences of four UW faculty members who have each taught a Massive Open Online Course through Coursera. What are the pedagogical strategies for teaching a class of thousands? How does a global perspective affect course content? Do you then rethink your residential course? UW-IT researchers looked at all these issues and more in reporting on how this new technology is being used by our faculty in their teaching.

UW-IT eTextbooks Pilot Concludes, Finds Areas for Improvement
More than 1,800 UW students in 23 courses explored the use of online eTextbooks for four quarters, ending winter 2013, and found the two tested platforms do not offer significant advantages over printed textbooks at this time. Findings from the UW eText pilot also determined that students want to be able to read when offline, search within digital textbooks, and are very concerned about cost. The UW-IT report will help inform the UW and others in the continued move toward eTextbooks.

New UW Safety Portal Launched
The UW has a new website focused on campus safety and emergency preparedness, with links to dozens of resources. Visit this safety portal to familiarize yourself with information on fire and evacuation, hazardous materials, lab safety, training, and more before an emergency or need arises. You also will find a link to sign up for the UW Alert text and email message service, to be notified of emergencies or crisis situations that may disrupt the normal operation of the UW.

MyPlan: New Features for UW Students and Advisers Aid Long-Term Academic Planning
To help with long-term academic planning, UW students now can add “placeholders” in MyPlan to remind them of classes they need to take to meet their academic goals. Placeholders can include course categories and ranges such as CHEM 1XX. They also will be able to add notes to both courses and placeholders. This fall, students will be able to run “Plan Audits” on their entire plan, not just courses taken or registered for, to see if they are on target for meeting their program requirements. Advisers, too, will soon see added functionality, with the ability to run degree audits and plan audits within MyPlan on behalf of students, and recommend courses for specific quarters.

E-RESOURCE: Project MUSE eBook Collection
The UW Libraries recently purchased the complete Project MUSE/University Press Content Consortium eBook collection, with unrestricted (DRM-free) and unlimited access to more than 20,000 peer-reviewed digital books in PDF format. Works range from science and technology to history and literature from over 80 university presses and scholarly publishers, including the University of Washington Press. The titles appear in the UW Libraries search, and are hosted on Project MUSE.

EdTech Magazine Publishes UW Business Intelligence Article
UW’s leading-edge work on improving data quality and increasing confidence in data across the University was featured in the summer issue of EdTech Magazine. “Business Intelligence: Why Does It Take So Long?” authored by Anja Canfield-Budde, UW-IT senior manager of decision support services, explains how the UW is working to deliver faster and better business information and why it’s such a complex endeavor.

Canvas Now Provides Easy Course Access for Staff, Improved Authorization
Canvas, the UW’s learning management system, now provides course access to non-matriculated students, guest lecturers, and others without a UW NetID, through integration with UW Groups Service. Canvas also provides the ability to assign administrative roles in the system to instructional, technology, and support staff, and those roles can now be more simply managed through ASTRA, the UW's central authorization management service.
